Book Summary: "Become the Best: Build a World-class Organization Through Values-based Leadership"
In October 2017, I met Prof. Harry M. Kraemer Jr. at Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University) during the Advanced Management Program (AMP). His speech and presentation about value-based leadership caught my attention. His passion and insights served as an inspiration for me to adopt a values-based leadership approach. His book, "Become the Best: Build a World-Class Organization Through Values-Based Leadership," still serves as a source of inspiration and direction for me in my pursuit of leadership with integrity and purpose.
1. Values-based Leadership: Kraemer emphasizes that true leadership goes beyond financial success and is based on core values and principles. Values-based leadership requires self-reflection, balance, confidence, and humility. Leaders must live their values to inspire trust and commitment in their organizations.
2. Self-Reflection: Regular self-reflection is crucial for personal and leadership growth. Leaders should know their strengths, weaknesses, and motivations, says Kraemer. Self-awareness helps one make values-based decisions and stay grounded, especially in difficult times.
3. Balance and Perspective: Leading requires balancing the needs of stakeholders such as employees, customers, investors, and the community. Kraemer emphasizes understanding different perspectives and making decisions that affect all stakeholders long-term. This strategy ensures long-term success and a positive workplace.
4. True Self-Confidence and Genuine Humility: Leaders who are confident in their abilities simultaneously acknowledge their limitations. This trait lets them ask for help, fostering collaboration. Humility means acknowledging others' contributions and giving credit. These traits foster respectful workplace relationships.
5. Values-Driven Decision Making: Kraemer offers pragmatic methods for aligning decisions with an organization's values. He stresses transparency, accountability, and ethics in building a world-class organization. Leaders should establish and uphold clear values that guide their operations.
6. Fostering Future Leaders: Nurturing future leaders is essential for values-based leadership. Kraemer discusses mentoring and employee development, emphasizing continuous learning. Organizations can ensure long-term success and strong leadership by investing in people.
